Congresswoman Michelle Steel Defends Her Support for IVF Against Misrepresentation in Heated Campaign

The two-term Congresswoman says her opponent and Democrat activists are openly lying about her position on the issue.

Congresswoman Michelle Steel hit back against her opponents saying they are lying about her position on the issue of Invitro Fertilization (IVF).

“As someone who struggled to get pregnant, this is of personal importance so let me be clear,” she said in an editorial for the Orange County Register. “I believe nothing is more pro-life than helping families have children and I do not support federal restrictions on IVF.”

Left-wing organizations and lobbyists have claimed that Steel and other Republicans are hypocrites for  supporting both IVF and protections for the pre-born. The New Republic proudly announced that “Bullying Republicans on IVF Hypocrisy Works” in an article from March of this year and Democrats launched an advertising campaign accusing Steel of trying to “ban abortion in California” despite her position at a federal level.

Republicans have repeatedly drawn a distinction between abortion as an act of terminating a preborn child and IVF medical procedures that helps couples conceive, but Democrats see an opening and continue to equate the two.

California’s 45th Congressional District is considered a swing district and House Democrats have poured millions into unseating Steel, the two-term incumbent. The campaign has become heated at times with opponents making jokes about her accent, race, and gender, and a brick being thrown through the window of her office.

“Coming to America as a teenager, I witnessed first-hand how an overbearing government hinders economic growth and is often biased against First Generations,” Steel said in an official statement, pivoting her campaign toward economic issues. “It comes down to honesty and conviction. While not everyone in my district agrees with me, they always know where I stand on the issues.”

Congresswoman Steel faces Democrat Derek Tran in the November 5th General Election. Both currently poll at 47% in one of the most competitive races of this election cycle.
