The seat is set to open next year after Rep. Katie Porter announced she will run for U.S. Senate.
Democratic State Senator Dave Min announced Jan. 18 that he’s joining the crowded race for the 47th Congressional District seat which is expected to become open next year.
Katie Porter, the current representative, revealed that she is running for the U.S. senate seat expected to open when Senator Dianne Feinstein finishes her term. This means the 47th District seat will be up for grabs.
Min, a first-term Democratic state senator, is not the first Democrat to announce for the seat after Porter’s announcement, as former Rep. Harley Rouda, who lost to Rep. Michelle Steel in 2020, has also announced he is running for the seat.
Former assemblyman Scott Baugh, a Republican who ran against Porter in 2022, also announced he is running for the same seat.
“I began my career holding Wall Street accountable during the financial crisis & protecting families from foreclosure. In the State Senate, I have fought for bold legislation to challenge politics as usual. Today, I’m proud to announce my candidacy for U.S. Congress, Min tweeted on Wednesday.
Min’s campaign quickly snapped up the support of Porter. “I endorse my friend Dave Min in his campaign for Congress and have every confidence that his campaign will ensure that California’s 47th Congressional District continues to be represented by a progressive Democrat,” she said in a released statement.
Min and Rouda, both Democrats, will need to run against each other in the 2024 primary, to see who will get to run in the general election.
“Orange County deserves leaders that put bipartisanship ahead of brinkmanship, and are focused on delivering results for the hardworking families of our state. I was that leader in Congress, and I’m proud to run to be it again,” Rouda tweeted.
“California needs leaders who are laser-focused on solving our environmental crisis, who will put bipartisanship ahead of brinkmanship, and who know how to grow businesses and our economy. I’m proud to have done just that – not only in Congress, but for decades in business,” he added.
Baugh, who is also hoping to fill the seat, narrowly lost to Porter in 2022.
Baugh tweeted, “Voters are rightfully upset with the dysfunction in Washington and deserve better. I am ready to go to work to restore thoughtful, conservative representation to our part of Orange County. That’s why I’m running for #CA47 in 2024.”
The 47th Congressional District includes Irvine, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach following 2020’s redistricting.
