Eric Swalwell Launches Run for California Governor

Congressman vows to fight rising costs and “the Trump agenda” as he enters crowded 2026 race.

Congressman Eric Swalwell has officially entered the 2026 race for California governor, announcing his candidacy during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and later through a video posted online. Swalwell, a Democrat who has represented the East Bay in Congress since 2013, is now one of several candidates looking to replace Governor Gavin Newsom, who is leaving office due to term limits.

Swalwell said he’s running to take on high living costs and protect California from what he called the “Trump agenda.”

“Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector,” Swalwell said in his announcement video. “Prices are too high and people are scared.”

Swalwell also added, “No one will keep California safer than I will.”

Known nationally for his role in the impeachment of former President Donald Trump, Swalwell has become a frequent commentator on political talk shows and social media. His campaign is expected to focus heavily on affordability, public safety, and defending progressive values.

During recent visits to more conservative parts of the state, Swalwell said people have told him they’re concerned about what will happen when Newsom leaves office. He said that “void” is one of the reasons he decided to run.

Swalwell enters a growing field of Democratic and Republican candidates who hope to lead the country’s most populous state. The primary election will be held in June 2026, with the top two vote-getters moving on to the general election in November.
