Sen. Dave Min Arrested for Drunk Driving, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Condemns Act

Mothers Against Drunk Driving said they hope the high profile arrest will serve as a reminder for others.

California State Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) announced today that he was arrested for driving under the influence last night, a move that is sure to hurt his already-announced 2024 congressional run for CA-47. Records from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department show he was released Wednesday morning.

Min wrote on his Facebook page, “Last night I was cited for a misdemeanor for driving under the influence. My decision to drive last night was irresponsible. I accept full responsibility and there is no excuse for my actions.”

In an attempt to save his endangered congressional campaign he added, “To my family, constituents and supporters, I am so deeply sorry. I know I need to do better. I will not let this personal failure distract from our work in California and in Washington.”

In a statement to California Courier, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a nonprofit organization advocating to put an end to drunk driving and provide resources to victims, condemned Min for committing an act that could put innocent lives in danger.

“[It is MADD’s] hope that a high-profile arrest will serve as a reminder to others to plan ahead for a safe way home if their plans include alcohol. MADD is saddened any time we hear that someone has made the choice to drive drunk — especially an elected official, who may be seen as a role model — since every 45 minutes someone is killed and every 90 seconds someone is injured as a result of drunk driving crashes.”

“Drunk driving affects everyone — celebrities, elected officials and every citizen alike — that’s why it is so important that we continue to educate the public about making smart and safe choices,” MADD also said.

MADD did not respond to California Courier’s question of if they thought Min was still fit to run for public office.

In California, a first time DUI will typically lead to 3-5 years of probation, DUI school, a 6 month driver’s license suspension, installation of an ignition interlock device, up to $1,000 in fines, and other penalties.
