Officers intervene in deadly family altercation, but arrive too late to save female victim.
Police in Irvine were forced to shoot and kill a man who was caught in the act of brutally stabbing a female relative on Thursday afternoon. The tragic incident unfolded in a usually quiet neighborhood near Green Tree Lane and Coral Tree Lane, with the suspect believed to have been recently released from prison.
Responding to a 2:50 p.m. call about an ongoing assault, officers arrived at the scene to find the man viciously attacking his family member on the street, just outside a nearby home. Without hesitation, the officers took decisive action, opening fire on the suspect in a desperate bid to save the woman’s life. Unfortunately, despite their swift intervention, the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Details regarding the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatal shooting, including whether the suspect complied with police commands, have yet to be disclosed. Authorities have confirmed the familial connection between the suspect and the victim, though they have refrained from releasing further specifics about their relationship.
“This is a deeply tragic event for our community,” stated Irvine Police spokesperson Kyle Oldoerp. “We are fully committed to investigating this incident thoroughly to determine the underlying reasons behind this horrific act.”
This marks the second officer-involved shooting in Irvine this week, following the fatal police shooting of a former caregiver accused of murdering a paralyzed man. Such incidents are rare in Irvine, and Oldoerp acknowledged the unusual nature of having two deadly police encounters occur so closely together.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved in Thursday’s fatal stabbing.
