John McCann Praises Port Development

The Chula Vista councilmember has expressed his support for the major construction project, which will fundamentally reshape the Port of San Diego.

Chula Vista Councilmember John McCann has publicly supported the Bayfront redevelopment project, a massive refresh which will involve the construction of a hotel and convention center adjacent to San Diego Bay.

The project, which has been in the making for decades, will begin work in early July. It involves a 1,600-room Gaylord Pacific hotel, and will include four ball rooms and three floors of meeting space. Construction is expected to continue for the next three years, with a grand opening in 2025.

While the construction of the hotel will lead to the closure of certain roads, there are also plans to expand park space on the Bayfront.

McCann said that after twenty years of planning, “It’s the best feeling in the world” for the City Council “to finally give the people of Chula Vista something that they deserve, the amenities that they will cherish forever,” adding that “this is a project that will last for over a hundred years.”

The City Council announced that they had secured funding for the project in early June, after voting to approve the project in May. McCann voted unanimously with his fellow councilmembers.

The project was also praised by other local officials, including Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas and Port Commissioner Ann Moore.
